Every Henry Woods skip booking includes delivery, collection, a 14-day hire window, a full waste transfer note and our recycling promise. The permit is added at council cost if you’re putting the skip on the road.
14 days' hire as standard
Your skip stays on your drive for two weeks. Need it longer? Just ask the yard. When you’re done, ring us to book the collection. We usually pick up within a couple of days.
Permit handled for you
If the skip’s going on the road, we apply for the council permit on your behalf in Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Bromley. The cost is added before you pay, so there are no surprises.
Waste transfer note
We issue this legally required document with every collection. It proves your waste was disposed of properly, which matters most for builders and trade customers.

Council permits
If it’s going on the road, we sort the permit.
Forgetting the permit is the #1 way skip hire goes wrong. We handle it on your behalf for every south London council we cover.
When do you need a permit? Any skip placed on a public road, pavement or grass verge needs a council-issued permit. Skips on private driveways do not.
- We apply on your behalf for every booking that needs one, so you don’t need to phone the council yourself.
- Cost included before you pay. The permit fee is added to your booking total before you reach the payment screen.
- Lead time: councils take anywhere from 2 to 8 days to approve a permit, depending on the borough. Book early and we will start the application straight away.
- Reflective markings and lighting, both required under the Highways Act 1980, are added by our driver at drop-off.
- Bay suspensions (when the parking bay your skip needs is in use): we can sometimes arrange these depending on the council; some require the homeowner to apply. Ring the yard to check.

Streams we handle on-site: wood, metals, aggregates & rubble, cardboard, general construction waste. Hazardous or restricted waste (asbestos, paint, solvents and oils, gas bottles, batteries, food waste, medical waste) is not accepted in our skips, but we’ll point you to a specialist.

Frequently asked questions
Skip hire questions, answered.
If your skip is going on a public road or pavement, yes, the local council issues a permit. We apply for it on your behalf when you book, and include the cost in your total before you pay. On a private drive, no permit is needed.
Tyres, asbestos, paint, solvents and oils, gas bottles, batteries, food waste, medical waste, plasterboard and fridge freezers. Everything else, including soil and rubble, goes in (just tell us in advance for the heavy ones). Small separate amounts of plasterboard can sometimes be taken by arrangement, so ring the yard first. Mattresses and upholstered furniture are taken at a small extra charge: single mattress £18, double mattress £24, sofas and armchairs £36.
Standard hire is two weeks. Need it longer? Just ring the yard and we will arrange it. When you’re done, ring us to book the collection. We usually pick up within a couple of days, depending on how busy we are.
Often we can, depending on lorry availability. Ring the yard on 0203 369 9540 and we will tell you straight. The online calendar shows the earliest slots we can guarantee, so phone if you need it sooner.
Our lorries are all standard size and need a clear width of 10 feet (3 metres) to get through. If you’re unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp (07766 191 470) before booking and we will tell you straight.
On concrete, tarmac and block paving, no. We use timber bearers under the feet to spread the weight. On gravel or grass, the marks will be visible while the skip’s there. Mention the surface in the booking and our driver will plan accordingly.
We run trade accounts for a small number of regular customers rather than as standard. If you hire often, phone the yard or email office@henrywoods.co.uk and we will see what we can do.
Every load comes back to the Mill Lane yard and is hand-sorted. Wood, metals and aggregates are separated into recycling streams. We recycle 95%, and only the unsortable residue ends up in landfill.
